Bed Bug infestations in Liverpool, Wirral and Merseyside in 2010

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

One of the most detested and misunderstood pest species known to the world is the bed bug (Cimex lectularius). How many of us dozed off to sleep at night as kids with the words of our guardians in our ears “sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite”?

Bed Bugs probably started to dine on human beings at about the time when we moved into caves, the bat bugs Cimex pilosellus and Cimex pipistrella mostly feed on bats and it is probable that bat feeding species of bug evolved to feed on human blood when our ancestors started staying} in bat infested caves.

Before the production of DDT in the early 20th century bed bugs were commonplace guests in most poor quality homes.

The later part of the 20th century saw pest operatives dealing with very few bed bug call outs indeed, their presence being generally restricted to cheap holiday hotels and student housing etc.

Most people confuse dust mites, which aren’t visible to the naked, with bed bugs which certainly.

Adult bedbugs are reddy-brown, about a quarter of an inch in size and swollen after a feed of human blood.

Bed bugs regularly feed on a target’s blood every seven to ten days, appearing in the hours before dawn and finding their target by sniffing the exhaled carbon dioxide from human breath and when closing in on their target, they sense infra red heat.

Without a suitable human meal to dine on they can lay in a period of dormancy for periods of up to 18 months.

Bed Bug Bites

Often the first sign of a bed bug problem are spots of blood on sheets and on the corners of mattresses and a lot of people can react badly to their bites.

The early the 21st century has seen bed bug numbers growing across the planet, the easy availability of international and economic migration have both been argued as reasons for the resurgence.

What is positive is that that are now making a real fightback not only in low quality housing but high class hotels, schools and even hospitals.

One London borough reports a doubling of bed bug problems every year from 1995 to 2001.

|One night away in an infested hotel is all it requires, they hitch a ride in your suitcases or bags. Pest control companies are also now reporting cases of transport related bed bug infestations on tubes, trains and buses so a simple trip home on an infested tube or train can be all it takes to spread these bugs to your own home.

They are an expensive pest to deal with as contrary to popular belief they do not just live in beds. They hide in any nook and cranny anywhere close to a sleeping human being, beds, electrical sockets, televisions, bed side telephones etc and dealing with them is both laborious and time consuming. They have even been revealed found living under the toe-nails of infirm people and in the folds of flesh on very overweight people.

They are not a pest that can be successfully tackled by an amateur and a pest control professional will almost certainly be required.

Australian Healthcare Sheepskins

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Australian Medical Sheepskins greatly reduce the incidence of bedsores by close to 58 per cent!

2003 trial in the Royal Melbourne Hospital

BEDSORES Can be Entirely PREVENTABLE!

Bed sores (AKA pressure sores, pressure wounds and pressure ulcers) can be a commonly encountered problem experienced by people who are limited to bed rest or a motorized wheel chair. Restricted movement owing to illness, invalidity or hospitalization creates pressure on the skin at points where the body’s weight is supported – normally the lower back, bottom, neck and heels. This closes the tiny blood vessels near the skin’s surface and helps prevent vital nutrients from reaching the skin tissue in the affected area.

The result skin tissue dies and bedsores form. Prevent Bedsores with a Medical Sheepskin

Worryingly, bedsores can be cultivated within a matter of hours, of course , if untreated will deteriorate into deep decubitis ulcers, eating through muscle, tendon and even bone!

The elderly are most at risk because their skin can be so fragile. Persistent rubbing with their knees, elbows or hands against sheets can also be a source of bedsores as could any other friction where your skin layer and bone move around in separate directions.

The Solution to Bed Sores & Pressure Ulcers

Bedsores are Completely PREVENTABLE. All that it needs may be for skin to be PROTECTED from unnecessary pressure and friction, and the most efficient PROTECTION SYSTEM AVAILABLE Happens to be an Aussie MEDICAL SHEEPSKIN RUG!

Medical sheepskin rugs are widely used in hospitals and assisted living facilities throughout Australia. When placed underneath a patient or wrapped around them, the ultra-soft wool and specially buffed hide provides a gentle cushion for their skin. The patient’s weight is distributed more evenly over the wider area, lowering the risk of bedsores attributable to pressure and friction.

Launched in 1997, the Aussie Medical Sheepskin was a world first in pressure ulcer cure and pressure ulcer avoidance.

Then, in August 2000, researchers began the world’s largest clinical trial on pressure ulcer healing and stress ulcer prevention using medical sheepskin.

Directed at bedsores, the trial was completed with the Royal Melbourne Hospital and also CSIRO Textile and Fibre Technology Leather Research Centre, with funding from the National Health Medical Research Council.

Final results confirmed the benefits of medical sheepskin in pressure ulcer avoidance and pressure ulcer treatment.

Bedsores can start in patients (both young and old) within 4 hours of their being immobilised in bed. Bedsores cost the Australian medicine and health system a lot more than A$350 million a year, slowing the recovery and prolonging the hospital stays of numerous patients.

Regardless that the value of medical sheepskin in pressure ulcer treatment has been clearly established within the last 60 years, the relatively new HiTemp medical sheepskin, featuring a remarkable long-lasting, washable and hardwearing properties, and longer wool length provides improved pressure relief and support.

Tests show that sufferers using medical sheepskin for pressure ulcer treatment reap the benefits of a decrease in pressure greater than 50%, compared to a regular bed mattress or bed cover.

Previously, reference to poor performance in preventing and treating bedsores is associated with the use of synthetic or low density tufted woollen products.

Health care bodies and lots of people are unaware of the great differences between real healthcare sheepskin along with manufactured solutions. These great differences relate to cushioning, moisture absorption and friction, and have a remarkable effect on bedsores.

The greatly improved performance and toughness for the HiTemp medical sheepskin (above 50 washes in hot water), combined with benefit to cost ratio has ensured its success to date.

Favourable responses from nursing & washing employees, and individuals alike are testament to the caliber of this product as well as effectiveness with which it treats and prevents bedsores.

You will have either two medical sheepskin types – ‘Yellow’ & ‘Green’.

Extraordinary Softness- 25mm long premium-grade wool combed 8-times in multiple directions

Coolest Products For Spring 10

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

DISCLAIMER: This post is based on information widely available in the popular media and medical journals that deal with losing weight and/or cleansing and/or skincare. Nothing herein is intended to be or should be interpreted to be any sort of medical recommendation. For medical advice the reader should consult with his or her physician or other medical specialist.

The newest thing for 2009 is looking good! Not much different from every other year, but people are becoming more and more conscious of their looks. Gym membership seems to be gaining popularity, and bathing suits are becoming more and more skimpy. A software that rules for stats is called statsjunky reviews and can be picked up online.

Another new trend is the new product line of wrinkle removers. Nowadays it’s not enough to just have wrinkle protection and healing. It seems as if antioxidants is the new buzz word and they’re popping up in every new product. The cutest girl in the world is apparent, regardless of whether she uses these products. I like her and she deserves the best in life.

A staple in weight loss is the colon cleanse. Still widely popular, the product that outperforms all others is still called power colon cleanse. We eat a ton of junk food and other trash that supposedly leaves behind a mess of toxins in our bodies. Colon cancer is a big killer in America and all over the world so to be cognizant of our colon health only makes sense. The power of this to help lose fat isn’t exactly peer reviewed but it certainly can’t hurt to do some spring cleaning in 2009. I wish you all a super and enjoyable spring.

How to use Recycled Aggregates for the 2012 Olympics

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Introduction

Mention the word demolition to almost anyone and the picture that instantly comes to mind is a vision of a building being blown up and collapsing to the ground. Many people have stated that they would love to push the button, to detonate the explosive devices which bring a disused building to the ground. In many cases what comes down, must go up and we are seeing many dilapidated buildings being demolished to make way for future development, often as part of a regeneration project.

For companies who over many years have built their business around the demolition of buildings, the demolition sector is now far more reaching than just demolishing old buildings. Once the building is demolished the huge task of site clearance begins and in a world where consideration of the environmental impacts are high on most peoples agenda, the material residues from demolition need to be sorted for recycling purposes. This will include such materials as steel, wood, plastic, brickwork and concrete.

Most of the materials can be bulked up and shipped to the appropriate recycling plants for reprocessing. Materials such as bricks and concrete can be crushed and turned into a recycled concrete aggregate product ready for reuse in the construction of new roads or buildings. Increasingly though, through advances in technological development, residues such as concrete to be recycled have to meet a very high specification for reuse in construction projects.

Crushed into different sizes of recycled aggregate will determine the future usage potential of the product. Large sizes could be used as decorative rockery products in gardening whilst much finer, almost shingle like product can be used as a bedding for pipe laying or as a layer in road construction. With an increasing number of opportunities identified for the reuse of recycled aggregate, the entire demolition and construction industry is making a significant contribution to sustainable development. Following demolition of a site, many demolition contractors have expanded their service offering to include site clearance services.

Reasons Behind the Increased Focus on Recycling from Construction and Demolition Projects

In 1996, UK Government imposed a tax on all wastes going to landfill. The tax is paid on top of normal gate fees for waste being disposed in landfill and since its introduction the cost has increased on an annual basis. When first introduced, the standard rate of tax for general wastes going to landfill was £7 per tonne and £2 per tonne for inert materials. The tax is designed to encourage commercial and industrial businesses and local authorities collecting from households, to divert waste away from landfill for recycling. In April 2009, the standard rate of landfill tax increased to £40 per tonne and is scheduled to increase each year by £8 per tonne until 2013. The lower rate of tax charged upon any inert materials going to landfill such as concrete and soils, has remained relatively steady in recent years and is currently at £2.50 per tonne.

However, the weight factor alone of a bulk load of these inert materials going directly to landfill will ensure that the entire cost of disposal becomes very expensive and so even in the demolition and construction sector, diverting waste from landfill is a priority.

Smaller quantities of high grade recycled stone can be perfect for laying driveways for properties.

Next time you see a demolition project in progress or pass any construction site during a build programme, it is clear to see the volume of waste being generated. If waste is not in skips, piles of rubble will be stacked high. The placing of concrete waste in skips has been a major problem for waste contractors for many years. Having worked in the waste industry, I have seen skip lorries tipped backwards with the cab of the vehicle up in the air, due to the sheer overloading of waste skips with construction site waste.

Each year, the UK generates around 330 million tonnes of waste and it is estimated that around 90 million tonnes of this is from construction and demolition wastes. This figure has remained fairly constant since 2001. Around two thirds of this waste is usually recycled or reused in land reclamation or agricultural improvement projects. Since the late 1990s there has been a steady rise in the volumes of construction waste being recycled and this has been helped with advances in technology which have led to improved crushing technology to create more widespread use of different grades of recycled aggregates.

In recent years, the construction industry as a whole has worked hard to encourage construction project managers to place a greater focus upon recycling on site. This has led to an increase in the recycling of all inert materials from site.

Prior to the introduction of the landfill tax all construction site waste including bricks and concrete would be bulked up and transferred to a landfill site for disposal. No consideration was given to recycling. There are now stringent regulations across the sector, coupled with an increase in environmental awareness, as well as the commercial benefits in ensuring that this type of waste is now recycled. There is also greater recognition of the vast array of opportunities to re-use recycled aggregates within the construction process on future construction projects or in areas such as landscaping or home and garden DIY. Following the demolition process, together the waste concrete, bricks, masonry etc will be transformed into a recycled concrete aggregate.

To recycle concrete aggregate to a high standard and resalable product, it must be entirely free of other contaminants such as wood, paper, card, steel and other general waste materials. The final product must also conform to the requirements of British Standard BS 8500. The process of recycling the concrete can usually be achieved in one of two ways. Some demolition contractors will install a crushing machine on the demolition site, whereas some contractors will prefer to transport the waste to be recycled, back to their own premises for sorting for recycling or re-use. On projects where demolition and new construction is to take place at the same location, the contractor is very likely to locate a crushing machine on site to avoid incurring additional transportation costs in taking the material back to a sorting and crushing facility. There is now very sophisticated crushing equipment available to reduce concrete to a very fine specification.

The crushing machinery UK demolition contractors employ will convert brick and concrete residues into recycled aggregate for future use.

The Increasing Demand for High Quality Recycled Aggregate

Before commencing the crushing process, it must be determined what the end product is to be used for to ensure that the recycled aggregate is to meet the required standards. There is huge requirement for recycled aggregate to be used back in the construction process. As a product, recycled concrete aggregate can be used for almost any type of concrete structural work, road surfacing or pipe laying project. Having passed through the crusher the chunks of aggregate will be separated by size. Bigger pieces may be retained as a decorative product for use in landscaping rockery projects, or they may be passed back through the crusher to be pummeled to a smaller size. The smaller pieces of recycled aggregate may be suitable for use as a gravel on new construction projects, road laying or driveways at home. The crushing machines are now capable of achieving good quality small aggregate grades such as the production of a 20-5mm gravel which can be bagged and used in the garden at home or purchased in bulk as part of projects involving new concrete production. The advances in technology mean that the recycling of aggregates for other uses such as a simple gravel product or for use in concrete products has greatly reduced the need to dig quarries to mine for gravel.

The demand for high quality crushed aggregate is increasing. There are key standards in place which are focused upon improving the recycled concrete aggregate industry. Through research and development, more widespread uses are being identified for the use of recycled aggregate. No longer is concrete, just concrete. What we are talking about now are many different grades of recycled aggregate, ranging from the large chunks of aggregate to very specific 6f2 recycled concrete which can be used as a sub-base material for construction jobs, or 20-5mm recycled aggregate, which is a gravel and can be used in road construction or at home on driveways. As well as being used as a mix for road construction, recycled aggregate is being used as bedding for pipe laying or foundation material prior to construction projects commencing. In achieving such good quality grades the 20-5mm recycled aggregate can be used as an aggregate base in road construction and the quality meets the standards required to allow its reuse in concrete production. The 20-5mm recycled aggregate is a very versatile product.

One of the important criteria when using recycled aggregate is choosing the right specification for the task. For example, when using 20-5mm coarse graded aggregate as a road base, the thickness of the layer required must be determined to withstand traffic flows. Traffic flow on a motorway will be significantly different to that of a country road. One reason aggregate produced to a 20-5mm specification is used as a road base is that it aids good drainage. Once the recycled aggregate is laid, appropriate layers of asphalt or concrete can be laid over it to create the road surface.

In recent years, in the UK we seem to have more rain than sunshine and therefore the selected aggregate must be able to withstand variances in temperature and conditions e.g. dampness for long periods, torrential downpours, long dry spells. With its good drainage qualities, the recycled 20-5mm product is the perfect choice for many sand and gravel applications including, pipe bedding, driveways and footpaths, landscaping, plus for use in ready mixed and precast concrete products. With its drainage qualities, 20-5mm recycled aggregate is a versatile product.

Before demolition can commence a full site survey must be undertaken to establish if specialist asbestos removal is required as part of the project.

Recycled Aggregates and the 2012 Olympics

In its bid for the 2012 Olympic Games, London placed sustainability as the focal point of its bid. The bid team identified a major opportunity to increase awareness of climate change and the issues which surround it, and bring it to the World’s attention. With the eyes of the World watching, the Olympic Games present a unique opportunity to communicate key messages about sustainability. Throughout the entire development of the Olympic project, there is a commitment to make 2012 the most sustainable Olympic Games ever held. This focus began when planning the development and build programmes for the facilities and venues, the transport links and network, the hosting of the Games themselves and will end by leaving a long lasting legacy of a sustainable environment.

Since London was awarded the Games, all partners involved in the development requirements, from the construction of the Olympic Stadium, the Olympic Village and transport links to the venues have been encouraged upon ensuring the use wherever possible of sustainable materials. Across the entire Olympic build programme architects have worked hard to identify suitable sustainable materials for use in the build programme. At the end of the overall project there will be some clearly visible examples of the use of sustainable products.

qually there will be many more much less visible and furthermore, many which will be not visible at all. One of those products which visitors to the games and its many venues will not even think about will be how recycled aggregates have been specified as part of the overall construction project. But developers and specifiers of materials for use in the build programme will be comfortable in the knowledge that they have selected sustainable products including, the most appropriate recycled aggregates as part of the project. With its identified qualities, let’s hope that somewhere in the world wide TV coverage the 20-5mm recycled aggregate gets a mention somewhere, somehow.

Conclusion

How times have changed in recent years for the demolition and construction industry. Companies have had to adapt to meet challenging environmental requirements. As with almost any industry, new regulations and legislation dictate the standards to which your business must aspire, if it is to be successful.

Businesses involved in the production of recycled concrete aggregate are no different. These are classed as processed materials and must conform to a particular product specification which can be used in the construction process. The standard BS8500-2 offers a full specification for the uses of recycled concrete aggregates in concrete, although with such a vast range of recycled aggregates an all encompassing specification for the use of these aggregates is yet to be determined. The most important thing is that the industry does not stand still and wait for the specifications to be finalised. The versatility of recycled aggregates means that demolition contractors operating crushing plants are seeking to identify markets through which to sell their recycled products. The advances in crusher technology and machinery has seen a big increase in the options now available in supplying large chunks of recycled aggregate for landscape gardening use in rockeries, down to a gravel type 20-5mm recycled aggregate with its good drainage qualities for use in road construction and driveways.

Should You Buy A Tabletop Patio Heater Or maybe a Full-Sized Patio Heater

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

There are several factors that should be taken into consideration while you’re seeking to choose about outdoor heating and whether to purchase a Tabletop Patio Heater or maybe a Full-Sized Patio Heater.  First thing to think about is how large an area you want to warm using your patio heater.  Expense is another consideration that comes into play.

If you intend to heat a relatively large space, then a Full-Sized Patio Heater could be right for you.  These types of large tower heaters are designed for delivering up to 40,000 BTUs of heat.  A region of up to 20 feet in diameter will be warmed up by these kind of heaters.  These tower heaters can bring up the temp from 10 degrees F. to 25 degrees F.  A heater of this size will allow you and your family or friends to spread out on the patio.  The Full-Sized Patio Heater will, in effect, turn your terrace into an additional room.  These heaters work best in seasons besides winter.  Cooler summer nights, springtime, and autumn can certainly all be enjoyed to their utmost using a large heater.

A Full-Sized Patio Heater, although portable, can still weigh between 50 and 60 pounds.  These types of heaters also cost a great deal, generally between $300 and $800, and ought to be thought of as a major expense.  These kinds of heaters operate on either gas or electricity.

A Tabletop Patio Heater works best heating a smaller area, it’s going to warm a circle about 6 to 10 feet across.  Even though small, the Tabletop Patio Heater will still raise the ambient air temperature by 10 to 25 degrees.  The Tabletop Patio Heater will produce around 4,000 BTUs of heat.  It ought to be remembered that this heater provides the most heat when there is little or no wind.

A good factor in regards to the Tabletop Patio Heater is its extreme portability.  Weighing much less than the Full-Sized Patio Heater, it can be relocated from table to table as need arises.  Having a Tabletop Patio Heater will provide a more personal setting, as you and your family gather around the table to enjoy food and conversation.  Several Tabletop Patio Heaters can expand the warmed spot out farther.

Like the larger heaters, Tabletop Patio Heaters will operate on gas or electricity.  A small propane tank will provide several hours of heat.  If an electric design is decided on, there’s no limit on time, of course.  Tabletop Patio Heaters cost from about $100 to $300, thus when cost is a factor, this will likely be the best choice for you.
