Finding a Roman Helmet for an Authentic Costume

Uncertain what kind of disguise to choose for a costume or for a masquerade party? Consider taking a step back in time, way back, and wearing one of a number of styles of Roman Helmets.

A distinguished looks of the Roman Helmets were their crest, which were beautiful feathers, usually made from horsehair, these were attached to the tops of the helmets. Some historical writings support the hypothesis that centurions who commanded more than one hundred troops wore the crests of their Roman Helmets transversally, whereas legionnaires, or foot soldiers wore their crests longitudinally.

Roman Helmets evolved over time from the Corinthian-style Helmets worn during the times of ancient Greece. They were also heavily influenced by the style of helmet worn by the Etruscans, who lived in what is now Italy, as well as the Gaul’s. By the way, it is commonly thought that the Gauls were also responsible for introducing chain mail to the Roman militia.

Unlike the greek helmets, the facial protection was not as good as the roman hemets that were worn in the 7th and 8th centuries, they protected the facial area fully making it otherwise very hard to see during battle. Roman Helmets were made for protection to the top and sides of the head and the back of the neck, besides acting as identification in battle.

To make your costume look historically accurate and complete, pair your Roman helmet with a red toga and a pair of sandals Or, if you prefer a combat-ready look, consider wearing a metal chest plate and leather skirt, with your Roman Helmet and sandals.
