Ways we save money at our house
Lately, especially with the recession news all the time, I have been looking at ways to trim the budget and keep more money in our savings account. As farmers at this time of year we have a lot of expenses and we’re waiting for money to come in from the crops we harvest. So with more money going out than coming in we have to be extra careful about pinching pennies.
Clipping coupons is a good way to save. I like to play that grocery game and combine coupons with sales to really save money. Our pantry is full of great food that will last for several months simply because we buy so much in bulk when its on sale. The net result is a savings of several hundred to over $1000 a year.
I also like to use high interest savings accounts to keep our money in. Our local banks pay about .2% interest, which is pathetic, so I use places like ING direct and FNBO direct to keep my money about 1.5% interest. Still not great, but one of the greatest rates around right now.
I also am careful with how much energy we use. I like to user heaters and air conditioners as little as possible and use energy efficient appliances whenever we can. Saving money and helping the environment are both great ideas.
